Signs of the Latter Days – Episode I

0

Central to the Signs of the Latter Days is the appearance of a Monstrous Being called or identified as Dajjal or Massihul Dajjal in the terminology of Islam, about whom a lot of Ahadith had been narrated. The phenomenon is known as the Anti-Christ in Christian terminology. The Dajjal or anti-Christ will unleash on humanity the greatest tribulations (fitna) and mischief of all times or since the Creation of Adam (as). There are many other signs set out in the Holy Qur’an. But first, we will examine some of the highly illuminating Ahadith on the appearance of Dajjal.

The first Hadith is a lengthy one narrated by Al-Nawas ibn Sama’an Al-Kilabi (Muslim Sahih), and reported in Riyadus Saliheen of Imam an-Nawawi (with English Translation by Sir Zaffrulah Khan published by Islam Publication Bureau pp. 824-827; and Dar Al-Manarah Publication No.1053 p.1185-1190). The highlights of the Hadith are as follows:

  1. Shortly after the appearance of the Dajjal and during his mischiefs, Allah will raise Massih Isa Maoud (the Promised Messiah) at the White Minaret in the East of Damascus.
  2. The Dajjal will manifest some wonders, some of which include:
  • Ordering the sky to rain and it will rain
  • He will order the earth to produce plants and it will do
  • Cutting a human being into two and re-instating him to life
  • His cattle will be very fat and produce plenty of milk such that the milk of a cow will be sufficient for a hamlet
  • He will move with the speed of cloud
  • He will impoverish the people who refuse to obey him and then exploit their poverty to enslave them.
  • He will come to a swampy land and order their resources of and they will follow him like bees follow drone.
  • He will spread everywhere on land and sea and wreak mischief all over
  1. In the process of the activities of the Dajjal, Allah will raise Massih Issa ibnu-Maryam (as) who will descend in the East of Damascus at the white minaret.
  2. Massih Issa ibnu-Maryam (as) will then chase Dajjal and catch him at the Gate of Lud and kill him.
  3. Gog and Magog (Yaajuj and Maajuj) will then emerge and will be exceedingly militarily powerful, and emerge between Greater Syria and Iraq;
  4. Allah will then send revelation to Massih Issa ibnu-Maryam Nabiyyu-Ullah to gather his companions to the Mount Toor for prayer for He, Allah, had sent men to the world whom no one can conquer in war.
  5. Massih Issa ibnu-Maryam Nabiyy-Ullah (as) will then pray to Allah and Allah will raise Daabal Ardhi that will strike Gog and Magog in the neck as a result of which they will all die in one Day such that dead bodies will fill the whole ground that will leave no space to place a foot.

Some other well-known narrations in Sahih Bukhari and Muslim narrated by several companions (including Hazrat Umar, Abu Huraira, and Anas, Zainab bint Jahsh, and recorded in Sahih Bukhari and Muslim mentioned that Dajjal will

  1. have fire and water and what appears to be his fire will be paradise, and what appears to be his water and paradise will be hell fire;
  2. be one-eyed, the right eye will be diseased and the left eye will be very bright;
  3. have KAFIR written on his forehead or between his eyes
  4. have some type of donkey, which will have very long ears and will announce its flight and convey people in its abdomen and fly to desired destinations;
  5. have some type of donkey that will consume coal and emit fire;
  6. have several lengths of days, someday will be the length of one month, some days like weeks and some like days;
  7. Gog and Magog will appear and will come through a hole as a result of which calamity will befall the Arabs and many will perish in the Middle East, as a result of increasing evil.

The Holy Prophet (SAW) was reported in a Hadith that when Muslims encounter Dajjal, they should recite the first ten verses of Suratul Kahf and the last ten verses.  Those verses speak of those who ascribe a Son to God, worship Allah’s messenger or make a jest of him. This clearly indicates that modern Christianity and Atheism constitute the anti-Christ or Dajjal. It is thus clear that Dajjal in his spiritual dimension symbolizes Latter-Day false Christian doctrines of the sonship of God, or God as the Messiah Son of Mary and the doctrine of Trinity which are diametrically opposed to the pure teachings of Jesus (as), as well reported in the New Testament and Holy Qur’an. Suratul Maryam (19) v. 37 reports Jesus (as) as declaring: “Surely Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him, and this is the Right Path”. In the New Testament, we read in Matt 4:10 where Jesus (as) said “Get thee hence, Satan, thou shall worship the Lord Thy God, and Him only shall thou serve”, and in  Mark 12:29-32, he is reported to have declared: “And Jesus answered him: The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel, The Lord our God is one Lord (v.29). And thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment (v.30). And the second commandment is like, namely this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandments greater than these (v.31). And the Scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but He (v.32).” This is also reported in Matt: 22:37. In Matt. 6:9-13 we have our Lord’s prayer: “Our father which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name ….. for Thine is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory, forever, amen”. This indicates that the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory belongs to God forever, as opposed to modern Christian teaching saying that the Kingdom and the Power belong to Jesus!

There is no doubt that we are living presently in the latter days from the Ahadith above. It is obvious from the Ahadith rendered above that the sign of Dajjal ordering the sky to rain and it will rain and ordering the earth to produce plants and it will. We have seen the tremendous achievement in agriculture through vast irrigation systems and hybrid plants that produce immense yields. We have also seen modern medical feats. Modern exotic cows producing more than 30 litres of milk have led to a situation where milk is available in abundance for the poor and the rich alike. Movement of modern means of transportation that are extremely fast. He will decide the future of poor countries by impoverishing them and making subservient. The swampy land that produces plenty of resources may be referring to Niger Delta areas in Nigeria and some other countries with swampy land producing crude oil while the people are no masters of their resources.  He will appear between Syria and Iraq, which has been happening at any rate and wreak a lot of mischiefs all over the world.

With all these signs, no one would be left in doubt as the fact that Al-Dajjal having appeared, the Promised Messiah, Isa ibn Maryam, should also have appeared. The Holy Prophet (SAW) said in that Hadith, that if Dajjal were to appear while he, the Holy Prophet (saw), he would argue with him and defend the Muslims. This means that a major instrument of the promised Messiah is unassailable arguments, apart from prayers.

The next episode, Insha Allah, will elucidate the signs of the Latter Days in the Holy Qur’an.

2019 Elections : Ahmadiyya Urges Stakeholders To Shun Election Malpractices, Fake News and Hate Speech

0

The Kogi State Chapter of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has called on all Nigerians, the political parties and their candidates, the officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security operatives to shun all election malpractices, hate speech and fake news in order to achieve free, fair, credible and peaceful elections come 16th February and 3rd March, 2019.

The Kogi Circuit Missionary of the worldwide Community, Al-Hafiz Yunus Omotayo, made the call on the Ahmadiyya radio programme, Voice of Islam, broadcast on the Kogi State Confluence Radio 94.1 FM, Lokoja, the Kogi State Capital.

While highlighting the current myriads of issues on the general elections, the eminent Islamic cleric identified the surge of hate speech, fake news, vote trading and election rigging as what can mar the nation’s efforts towards free, fair, credible and peaceful elections. He lamented fears of election violence that can further endanger the peace and security of the nation and individual.

Speaking further, Omotayo said that, being a religion whose adherents make up larger percent of Nigerians, these electoral exigencies necessitate the need to enlighten the public about the teachings of Islam on such issues, so as to be better guided in their mindsets, worldviews and conducts in all aspects of political and electoral affairs.

Drawing from Quran chapter 3, verse 27, on Islamic concept of leadership, he stressed that, “We have to understand and appreciate the fact that Allah is the Ultimate and Supreme Sovereign Who has all kingdoms and governments in His Hands. He is the Ultimate Elector Who gives the privilege and opportunity of leadership to whosoever He pleases among people; and takes it away from whomsoever He pleases.”

He recalled a statement of the Prophet Muhammad where he declared that “your actions are what determine the type of leadership you have.” Explaining this, he said, “this means that if a substantial number of good people makes up a country, the result would be an enthronement of good leadership. But, if it’s otherwise, then what you would have will be bad leadership.” “So for our elections to produce good leadership, we have the collective responsibility to be good citizens,” he added.

He stressed further that the Holy Quran declares that franchise or the right to vote as well as political offices are trusts that must be consciously, conscientiously and righteously discharged. He supported his assertion with Quran 4:59 which states that, Verily Allah commands you to make over the trusts to those entitled to them, and that, when you judge between men, you judge with justice. And surely excellent is that with which Allah admonishes you!” Commenting on this, he said, “This verse clearly makes it clear that your vote is not just your right, but also a trust entrusted to you and you will be accountable to God for why you cast your vote for the particular candidates you voted for.  Adding that, “This Quranic declaration very strongly condemns all forms of election malpractices, like vote buying and rigging of elections in favour of any underserving candidates.”

On fake news, according to him, the teachings of the Holy Quran are very apt and compelling, as it declares in verse 7th of its chapter 49 that, “O ye who believe! If an unrighteous person brings you any news, ascertain the correctness of the report fully, lest you harm a people in ignorance, and then become repentant for what you have done.” Further referring to Quran 17:36, he summed up that “All these injunctions clearly require that we must not create, believe and spread rumours and fake news.”

Addressing the issue of hate speech, he stated Islam’s categorical condemnation of all forms of this menace, drawing authorities from Quran 2:84 which enjoins that, “And speak to men kindly”, and Quran 49:14: “O ye who believe! Let not one people deride another people who may be better than they, nor let women deride other women who may be better than they. And defame not your own people, nor call one another by nicknames. Bad indeed is evil reputation after the profession of belief; and those who repent not are the wrongdoers.” Adding his voice to these Holy Words, he stressed that, “To experience sustainable national and individual peace and security, we must shun and condemn all forms of provocative and hate speech that seeks to abuse, insult and hurt people’s ethnic, religious and political sentiments and sensibilities.”

Demystifying further the exigencies of the general elections, he appealed to the sense of responsibility of the Nigerians “to appreciate the fact that election is definitely not a war or a do-or-die affair and should not be taken or conducted as such. No politician should use violent means to pursue their goals. Likewise, Nigerian youths should not allow unscrupulous politicians to use them to carry out evil acts.” “We must never allow all past pains which we experienced due to the massive destruction of lives and properties in the previous elections to be our lot again.” “And create not disorder in the earth after it has been set in order. This is better for you if you are believers,” the Islamic scholar quoted from Quran 7:86 to appeal to his audience.

In his perspective, “elections are always historic moments during which we collectively make critical decisions that affect our individual and national destinies.” “While elections come and go, their impacts are bound to make or unmake us, depending on how we conducted them and the individuals whom we voted to run our collective affairs,” he said.

Concluding, he remarked that, “These are the teachings of Islam which we need to practice and promote during this critical time in our country in other to sustain our individual and national peace, security, solidarity, unity, and development.”

What Can Today’s Leaders Learn from the Successful Rulers of Ancient Empires?

0

History can be a great resource for people to learn just about anything. In the area of leadership, since rulers can rightfully be considered leaders of their times, where else to draw lessons than from the successful rulers of great ancient empires? In this short article, I have summarized 3 key recurring patterns of thoughts, actions and behaviors that are common among the successful rulers of ancient empires that can be used to aid today’s leaders to become better leaders.

1. Create branding

In ancient China, many great emperors established mystic legends about their origins. For example, Liu Bang, the founding emperor of the Chinese Han dynasty, capitalized on folklore to boost his credentials as the destined future emperor. To further cement his credentials as a rightful king, his propaganda team also alleged that he was a descendant of the mythical Emperor Yao, who descended from the Yellow Emperor.

2. Expand territory

By expanding the empire‘s territory, a ruler can harvest additional land, resources and people that would eventually help to propel the empire forward in a virtuous cycle. For example, during Catherine the Great’s reign, she expanded the Russian Empire rapidly by conquest and diplomacy. In the south, the Crimean Khanate was destroyed after victories over the Ottoman Empire in the Russo-Turkish wars, and Russia colonized the vast territories of Novorossiya along the coasts of the Black and Azov Seas. In the west, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was partitioned, with the Russian Empire gaining the largest share. In the east, Russia established settlements in Alaska. It is no wonder that it was during her reign that Russia was finally recognized as one of the great powers of Europe in the 18th century. Her reign was known as Russia’s golden age.

3. Implement reforms

Great rulers implement many reforms that benefit the people and the empire at large. For example, the first emperor of China, Shi Huangdi, implemented a number of reforms after the unification of China in 221 BC. In many respects, he had no choice given the complexity and diversity of ruling such a vast land with various peoples and cultures. It should be noted that the period before his unification was known as the warring states period where there were technically seven countries – with 7 systems, 7 cultures, 7 language, 7 histories etc. His reforms brought about many advances in Chinese society. The feudalistic system of the past was abolished to make way for a centralized bureaucratic government system. He implemented a standard system of weights and measures and currency. A common system of taxation was imposed from which no one was exempted (lords and high ranking officials were previously exempted in some states). The axle length on wheeled vehicles was also standardized so that traffic could be better controlled and improved. A standard system of writing was also introduced so that communication could be made easier amongst his people.

Taking a page from the 3 key recurring patterns of thoughts, actions and behaviors of successful emperors of ancient empires, today’s leaders could better earn their credential to lead by having a strong personal brand and developing special skills, knowledge and attributes. Today’s leaders need to constantly review their work and workspace to seek opportunities to take on a bigger role and make a greater business impact. Through implementing internal projects with highly visible benefits to the team a good leader can streamline and redesign business processes and systems to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the entire enterprise.

Amir Commissions Central Internet Facility at Jamia Ilaro

0

As a way of embracing the uniqueness and effectiveness of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the society, the Amir (Head) Dr. Mashhud Fashola recently commissioned the Central Internet Facility at Jamia Ahmadiyya, Ilaro. The internet router which was located at the Jamia Computer building would be powered by the solar panel on its rooftop if there is a power outage.

The facility will serve all the institutions in Jamia except the Female Hafiz Class. These include Jamiatul-Mubashireen, Hafiz Class (Male) and Ahmadiyya Science College (ASC). Amir was optimistic that the facility will go a long way in broadening the knowledge of not only the tutors but that of the students as well.

He said it will also assist in making further research on Islam, Ahmadiyya Community, and other contemporary issues. He, however, warned against abuse of the privilege. Maulvi Ahmed Abdul Azeem of Jamiatul-Mubashireen was appointed to man the facility. He is to collate the names of eligible users and input them into the system.

Dr. Fashola further inspected the E-Library built and donated by the Majlis Ansarullah Nigeria (the elder’s group of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community).

The Amir later visited the Ahmadiyya Science College (ASC) computer laboratory where the central internet connection was also tested.

Sheikh Zakariyyah, Tejidini extol Ahmadiyya on the training of Hufaz

0

A renowned Quranic reciter Fadhilat Sheikh Abbas Zakariyyah Al-Qari has lauded the efforts of Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at Nigeria in the production of Hufaz (young boys and girls who have memorized the Holy Quran) in Nigeria.

He stated this at the third edition of the graduation ceremony of the Jama’at’s Female Hafiz Class held at Jamia Ahmadiyya Ilaro.

Sheikh Zakariyyah who expressed delight for his presence at the historic event commended the Islamic organization for being the first runner in the establishment of Hafiz School in South Western Nigeria.

According to him, his research on Tajweed (a study on the correct recitation of the Holy Quran) led to the discovery that Ahmadiyya Community in Nigeria was indeed pioneer founder of Hafiz School in South Western Nigeria and the organization also produced the first set of Hufaz in the region. Among them are Hafiz Mubaraq Kukoyi; Hafiz Muslihuddeen Opayemi and Hafiz Abdul Ghani Shobambi.

Also reacting to the successful training of the young girls was the National Missioner/ Chief Imam of Rahmat Islamiyya Association of Nigeria, Sheikh Ishaq Adebayo Tejidini who appreciated the Islamic organization in exemplifying the true preaching of Islam.

Sheikh Tejidini recalled his relationship with Ahmadiyya Community through the Amir (Head), Dr. Mashhud Fashola and the National Tabligh (Preaching) Secretary, Dr.Sa’eed Timehin and affirmed that he has never been disappointed whenever in the midst of Ahmadi members at various events.

“How can anyone say members of Ahmadiyya are non-Muslims? The organization is a true Muslim sect which has been championing the true tenets /preaching of Islam globally. I am very pleased with the manner in which the graduation ceremony was organized. It meets true Islamic standards. The Jama’at has well-trained Missionaries who preached to people in the most humble manner.”

“Training the female wards is one of the most difficult tasks to execute but Ahmadiyya has succeeded in training the young girls to the extent of memorizing the Holy Quran in spite of the prevailing social vices. This is indeed worthy of emulation,” he submitted.

The Amir attributed the feat to one of the blessings and benefits of Khilafat. He said the organization is ranked among the best in the production of Female Hafiz Class graduates. He stated that the journey of the school started in the year 2010 and has so far produced 30 graduates. Dr. Fashola thanked the Almighty God for the achievement and also appreciated the efforts of the coordinator, administrative staff and all those who had contributed immensely to the success of the programme.

Meanwhile, 12 students graduated successfully from the 3 rd set while two students graduated from the 4th set. The graduating students are Hafizho Teslimat Raji; Farhat Timehin; Atiat-Nasir Oni-Bashir; Aishat Taofeek; Amotul Basit Akinlolu; Ihsanullah Adewale; Qowiyyah Monzoor; Hikmatur-Rahman Obaditan; Mubashiroh Abdul-Lateef; Fatihat Adeagbo; Azeezat Balogun; Atiatur- Rahman Obaditan and Barakallah Bakare. From the 4th batch are Hafizho Mazeedat Shittu and Hasbiyallah Morenikeji.

Coordinator of the institution, Mrs. Monsurat Akewugberu urged the graduating students to be prayerful and maintain a high moral standard. She implored them to be truthful and to always dress decently.

She also advised the parents to always monitor them at home in relation to observing Tahjjud, regular revision without distortion and participation in Nasirat, Lajna and all the Jama’at programmes.

Other personalities that attended the event are: the Naib Amir South West, Alhaji Abdul Azeez Alatoye; Naib Amir North; Alhaji Abdul Yaqeen Habeeb; the General Secretary AMJN, Alhaji Abbas Iromini; Sadr (Head) Majlis Ansarullah (Elders Forum), Alhaji Abdul Waheed Adeoye; Jalsa Officer, Alhaji Mufadhil Bankole and the Principal Jamiatul-Mubashireen, Maulvi Nadeem Waseem.

In a related development, one of the products of the Tahfizi-Quran Jamia Ahmadiyya Ilaro, Hafiz Abdus Sobur Adeleke had emerged the winner in category 5 of the 33rd National Quranic Recitation Competition held at Gombe State University.

Abdus Sobur represented Edo State at the competition which has in attendance, representatives from all the 36 States of the federation including the FCT.

The Ahmadiyya Jama’at is well known for presenting participants at the annual Quranic Recitation Competition over the years and have won several laurels and prizes.

At this year’s competition, the Jama’at was represented by seven members (three Hufaz and four Hafizah) who qualified in different categories from different states.

They are Hafiz AbdulFattah Sodiq who represented Ekiti State in complete Quran and Tafsir. Hafiz Abdus Sobur Adeleke who represented Edo State in 10 Hizb (Tanzeem). Mahmud Adeleke who represented in 2 Hizb. Hafizah Badmos Rasheedah who represented Ogun State in 40 Hizb. Hafizah Haseebah Okutimirin who represented Ogun State in 40Hizb. Hafizah Ne’matul Moughni Ariyo who represented Bayelsa State in 20 Hizb, and Hafizah Roqeebah Hamzah who represented Edo State 2 Hizb.

All the participants recorded good performance in their respective categories and Hafiz Adeleke eventually won the first position in Category 5. He received his prizes from the Deputy Governor of Edo State at the Palace of Otaru of Auchi, Edo State.
