Ofcom fines UK-based TV station for anti-Ahmadi Muslim hate speech

A UK-based TV station has been fined £75,000 by Ofcom after broadcasting hate speech about the Ahmadi community, amid growing fears that the religious group is facing persecution. Channel 44, an Urdu-language current affairs satellite channel, broadcast two episodes of a discussion programme featuring a guest who “made repeated, serious and unsubstantiated allegations about members of the Ahmadiyya community”, the broadcasting watchdog said. The guest, who appeared on the Point of View show, which was made in Pakistan, claimed Ahmadi people had “committed acts of murder, terrorism, and treason as well as undertaking political assassinations”. The same guest also claimed the Ahmadi community, which has its roots in northern India in the late 19th century, was favored in Pakistan at the expense of orthodox Muslims. The ruling comes during ongoing concern over discrimination against the Ahmadiyya movement, a minority sect of Islam that faces persecution and violence in Pakistan and Indonesia as well as hostility from some orthodox Muslims in Britain. The Ahmadi community moved its global headquarters from Pakistan to south London in the 1980s, after a constitutional amendment declared its followers to be non-Muslims and they were later barred from practicing their faith. During the programmes broadcast by Channel 44 in early December 2017, Ofcom said the guest “made remarks that attributed conspiratorial intent to the actions of the Pakistani authorities towards the Ahmadiyya community”. Ofcom found the channel breached three clauses in its code, covering the context of offensive material, hate speech, and derogatory treatment of religions or communities. Arguing that Pakistani officials had “inducted” Ahmadi people into the police and education department, the guest called on the country’s people to “rise up” against this. Expressing Regrets City News Network (SMC) Pvt Ltd, which runs the channel, aside from the £75,000 fine, it was ordered to broadcast a statement about the ruling. The firm expressed its “regret and sincere apologies for the failings in the compliance for these two programmes”. It described the failings as unintentional and said it did not intend to cause offense to the Ahmadi community. Similar fines on hate broadcast Last year, a community radio station was fined £10,000 after broadcasting “abusive and derogatory” statements about the Ahmadis. Radio Ikhlas, based in Derby, suspended a presenter and broadcast an apology after a radio phone-in that discussed the beliefs of the Ahmadi community in offensive and pejorative terms. In 2013 a TV station was fined £25,000 after broadcasting two programmes subjecting the Ahmadi community to abuse. Takbeer TV, a free-to-air Islamic channel, made the offensive broadcast.

Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Marks 130years of Existence Globally

Saturday, 23rd March 1889 will forever remain a unique and historic day in the history of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in particular and Islam in general.  It was a remarkable day when Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, the Promised Messiah(Peace and blessings of Allah be on him) accepted the hands of 40 sincere and faithful servants in allegiance to the Ten Conditions of Baiats (Initiation) and established the community which he named “The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.  This oath of allegiance was taken at the house of a spiritual preceptor Hazrat Sufi Ahmad Jan in the city of Ludhiana (Punjab India).  Hazrat Maulvi Hakim Noor-ud-Din was the first person to have the honour of taking the first Baiat.  This was a revolutionary yet a very modest beginning to a new chapter in the history of Islam. 130 years after this day, the Community is spread across over 200 countries in Africa, America, Asia, Australian and Europe.  The membership of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Community is in the millions and is increasing every day.  It is the most dynamic and positive religious force on the earth today.  In the face of all adversity, the Community teaches the true Islam globally in all its purity. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is the foremost Islamic organization with a central spiritual leader, known as the Khalifa of Islam.  Over a century ago, the Promised Messiah(as) reminded his followers of God’s promise to safeguard the message of Islam through Khilafat (the spiritual institution of successorship to prophethood).  The Community believes that only spiritual successorship of Khilafat can uphold the true values of Islam and unite humanity. Five spiritual leaders have succeeded the Promised Messiah(as) since his demise in 1908.  Its fifth and current spiritual head is His Holiness, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad(AS). Under the leadership of Islamic Khilafat, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has now built over 16,000 Mosques, over 500 schools and over 30 hospitals.  It has translated the Holy Quran into over 70 languages.  It propagates the true teachings of Islam and message of peace and tolerance through 24 hour satellite television channel, Muslim Television Ahmadiyya (MTA), the internet – www.alislam.org and print media – Islam International Publications. The Community has been at the forefront of worldwide disaster relief through an independent charitable organization, Humanity First International. Annually, followers of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community mark 23rd of March as “The Promised Messiah(AS) Day.  This year is not an exemption as the Jama’at clocks 130 years on Saturday, 23rd March 2019. In his latest Friday sermon, the Amir (Head) Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at Nigeria, Dr. Mashhud Adenrele Fashola said the anniversary was neither a birthday celebration nor jamboree.  He stated that Masih Maoud Day remembrance has to do with the spiritual and moral uprightness of all members.  He also said the importance of the day is to reflect on the teachings of Masih Maoud. “In terms of knowledge, no one is closer to the Holy Prophet(SAW) than the Promised Messiah(as).  If not for the advent of Prophet Muhammad(saw) we will not be existing today.  It is good to celebrate the companions of Holy Prophet(saw).  Their life styles are unparalleled, inconceivable and great.  We cannot match them in attributes.    We will be ungrateful if we don’t celebrate Hazrat Masih Maoud Day.  Our existence would be like that of an animal if not for his emergence,” Amir opined. Dr. Fashola affirmed that Prophet Muhammad(saw) was the greatest of all mankind due to his unflinching love for humanity showed through the sufferings and a lot of sacrifices he made, adding that it is incumbent on all Muslims to always invoke Darood (Praise) on him to receive abundant blessings from Almighty God. He noted: “The love Imam Mahdi(as) has for the Holy Prophet is unquantifiable.  It is a pity on those who neglected the advent of Imam Mahdi. They are practically neglecting the Holy Prophet of Islam.  Imam Mahdi came to continue the good works of the Holy Prophet(saw).” Highlighting the importance of the advent, the Amir said Imam Mahdi(as) came to teach complete obedience to the commandments of Almighty God.  That he (Imam Mahdi) brought back the peaceful teachings of Islam.  He further said the Promised Messiah brought back the spiritual and moral legacies of the Holy Prophet(saw).  He said that the advent led to the establishment of Khilafat Ahmadiyya. The Lagos State Branch of Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at Nigeria also marked the Masih Maoud Day at the Tahir Mosque, Ojokoro, Lagos. Maulvi Afzaal Ahmad Rauf, the Missionary Incharge who was the special guest of honour at the programme stated that it is imperative for all members including the children to follow the footsteps of Imam Mahdi(as) who was regarded as a staunch follower of the Holy Prophet(saw). He informed that the Promised Messiah(as) engaged in a lot of sacrifices and indeed observed fasting for a period of 60 days, all for the victory of Islam.  He said the dedication and supplication of Imam Mahdi towards this achievement cannot be overemphasized. “Imam Mahdi cherished Almighty Allah throughout his life.  Let us all love God and sacrifice our money, time and children for the sake of Allah.  The Promised Messiah was ever ready to sacrifice everything about him in the way of Allah.  Let’s inculcate the love of Allah in ourselves and our generations as exemplified by Imam Mahdi(as),” the Missionary Incharge said. The senior missionary sees the celebration as an opportunity for all members to renew their pledge and turn a new leaf.  He further advised that members must give complete obedience to Imam Mahdi and all the instructions of the Khilafat. Missionary Abdul Haadi Babarinde of the National Headquarters discussed on the topic: “Love and Obedience of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, the Promised Messiah(as) to the Holy Prophet(saw): An Excellent Model for Spiritual Upliftment.  He said Imam Mahdi expressed his love for Prophet Muhammad through obedience.  That he demonstrated the love in practices and way of life. He advised all Muslims to develop true love for Prophet Muhammad and follow his excellent virtues.  He said it is the best way of showing love for Almighty Allah. Another lecture titled: “Hazrat

AMIR ATTENDS OSUN POST RAMADHAN GRAND LECTURE

Dr. Mashhud Adenrele Fashola, the Amir (National Head) of Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Nigeria was a special guest of honour at the annual post-Ramadhan grand lecture organized by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Organization, Osun State held at Ansarudeen Central Mosque Ejigbo, Osun State. His attendance at the programme was part of the itinerary of his one-day working visit to the State and was accompanied by the Naib Amir (Deputy National President) South West region Alhaji AbdulAzeez Alatoye, the General Secretary AMJN Alh Abbas Iromini and National Secretary for Agriculture Prof. Abdur Rahman Abdullah. Delivering his lecture on the topic of the day titled: ” Contemporary Challenges and Its Impact on Human Development, ” the guest lecturer and the National Secretary for Tabligh (Preaching) AMJN Dr. Saheed Olurotimi Timehin highlighted some of the challenges hindering the growth and development of human race in the country. These include political challenges, economic challenges, moral and spiritual challenges as well as security challenges. He traced the genesis of Nigeria’s problems to the forceful amalgamation of the two halves of the country- Northern and Southern protectorates in 1914 by the British. A decision he said, was taken by the Westerners to satisfy their selfish motives of improving their economic activities to the detriment of the indigenous people. Dr. Timehin said the country is at the brink of total collapse due to the nonchalant attitudes and selfish interest of the government, and if necessary machinery is not put in place, aggrieved Nigerians may soon wage war against the government. He added that Nigerians are suffering and that the constitution only favors the looters and not the masses. Way out of Bad Governance According to him, one of the surest means of solving the contemporary problems affecting human development is for the government to provide good governance at all levels. That government must re-orientate and empower the youths, provide the basic amenities needed by all to survive. He also said there was an urgent need to review the constitution to correct some flaws it contained. The senior lecturer of Arabic Studies at Lagos State University also urged all Muslims to understand and fear God Almighty and pray fervently for His intervention. Dr. Timehin further admonished youths not to be indolent and lazy. That youth must strive to be self-reliant and upgrade their status in their various professions. Dr. Fashola, in his remarks, opined that the political process in Nigeria has been faulty ab initio hence the prevalence of bad governance in all government parastatals but believed the problem could be a nip in the bud with collective and sincere prayers. He also advised the government to expedite actions on improving the living standard of the populace.

AHMADIYYA COMMUNITY OPENS NEW INTERNATIONAL HEADQUARTERS

The World Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, the Fifth Khalifa, His Holiness, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad delivered the keynote address at a special reception held to mark the opening of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s new headquarters in Islamabad, Tilford, UK. In his keynote address to a gathering of over 300 guests, including Members of Parliament, Members of the House of Lords, Members of the Armed Forces, various other dignitaries and local residents and neighbours, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad began by expressing his gratitude and appreciation to the guests in attendance and to the neighbours of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s new headquarters in Islamabad.  Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:“I wish to offer my heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to our neighbours and to all the local residents in this area, as well as to the local Council members who have shown immense generosity and proved that they are tolerant and open-minded by enabling us to redevelop this complex.”  His Holiness spoke about the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s historical ties to the site and explained that the 25-acre site (now 33-acres) was purchased in 1985. The site had previously been used as a boarding school, which had closed  in 1977 and remained unused until the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community purchased and renamed the property as Islamabad “Chapter 4, verse 37 of the Holy Quran imposes a code of moral values which true Muslims must adopt and live their lives by and it guides them about how to interact with other members of society. Where on the one hand, the verse states that Muslims must worship Allah the Almighty alone and not associate any partners with Him, it also commands them to show compassion and love to all mankind.”  “The verse then categorically states that Muslims must fulfil the rights of their neighbours, including those with whom they have personal relations and those with whom they do not. Fulfilling the rights of neighbours means that Muslims must treat their neighbours with grace and compassion and be ever ready to help them in their times of need and times of grief. It means to respect them and to hold them in the highest regard.”  Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad further elaborated upon who is meant by a ‘neighbour’ according to Islamic teachings.  Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:  “According to Islam, the definition of a neighbour is extremely far-reaching. The Founder of Islam, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) stated that a person’s neighbours are not just those who live in the immediate vicinity but include at least the nearest 40 houses. In light of this, we consider all of the people living in this area and even those who may travel on the roads near this site as our neighbours.”  Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad informed the audience that he had instructed Ahmadi Muslims to treat all local residents and neighbours of Islamabad with the utmost courtesy and respect at all times.  Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:  “It is incumbent upon all Ahmadi Muslims, whether they live here at Islamabad, whether they live locally or even if they just travel here to attend the prayers, to follow the laws, to be considerate at all times and to fulfil the rights of our wide circle of neighbours and to try to ensure that no distress or disturbance is ever caused to them.”  Leading by example, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad himself made a beautiful promise to the local residents and neighbours of the Islamabad site.  Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:  “I personally pledge that I will uphold and honour your rights and strive to care for all of you and I will continually urge the members of our Community to do the same.”  Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:  “Allah the Almighty has commanded Muslims that it is not enough for them to merely worship in the Mosque but they must serve their local communities and constantly strive to help those who are in need. In fact, Allah the Almighty states that the prayers of those who fail in their duties to mankind are worthless and will never be accepted by Him.”  His Holiness spoke about the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s Mosques the world over and explained that wherever the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community builds mosques, serving humanity and the local community becomes an integral part of the Mosque and the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s presence.

SHOCKING REVELATION ABOUT VITAMINS AND MINERALS DEFICIENCY

According to UNICEF’s Global Damage Assessment Report, one-third of the world’s population suffer from vitamins and minerals deficiencies leading to debilitating bodies, minds, energies, and economic prospects of nations. In fact, UNICEF’s Executive Director, Carol Bellamy, warned that: “It is no longer a question of treating severe deficiency in individuals. It is a question of reaching out to whole populations to protect them against the devastating consequences of even moderate forms of vitamin and mineral deficiency.” What the above means for the world is the impairment of millions of growing young minds and dangerous reduction in national IQs. If you thought vitamin and mineral deficiencies were a thing of the past, think again. Here are some statistics that you may be very shocked to learn: Surprised? A lot of people are. It’s easy to believe that deficiencies were something that happened long ago when food wasn’t as prevalent as it is now. People would have only what they harvested or hunted right then. They didn’t have the ability to process foods and make them last as we can today. That often meant that their diets didn’t contain a wide variety of food so certain vitamins and minerals would, of course, be missing. But, today there’s food on almost every corner, so how is it that we’re deficient in anything? Well, deficiencies go beyond just the foods you eat. There are certain behaviors or conditions that can put you at risk for not absorbing enough vitamins and minerals. Here are just a few: The list goes on and on. Some people even develop deficiencies in the name of health! For example, some diets promote excessively limiting or even eliminating whole groups of food to help you lose weight. The cabbage soup diet is one of them. That’s where you can eat nothing but cabbage soup all day, every day. While most people aren’t on those types of eating plans for any length of time, if it’s a way of eating you consistently go back to, you may be increasing your odds of developing a deficiency. Probably one of the most common ways of eating that eliminates certain food groups is vegetarianism. In the name of health, spiritual belief or animal rights, vegetarians vow to not eat certain things. There are several diverse types of vegetarians. For instance, a vegan is someone who doesn’t eat any kind of food that used animal products as an ingredient or even in the processing phase. They don’t eat eggs, dairy or honey. If someone is a lacto-ovo-vegetarian, that means that they don’t eat meat or shellfish, but they do eat eggs and dairy; that’s the general vegetarianism. Pescatarians don’t eat meat like lamb or pork, but they will eat fish. While each form of eating has certain health benefits, they also have higher risks of deficiencies because they’re cutting out categories of food that are high in vitamins and minerals. Red meat has a high amount of iron, zinc and riboflavin. So, if you remove these foods from your diet, you risk not getting enough of these important minerals in your body. Milk and dairy products are extremely high in calcium and vitamin D. Cut those out, and you must find other ways for your body to get it. The point is that you could be doing things that are putting you at risk and not even realize it. And, if you think that because you’re taking a multivitamin you aren’t at risk, you’re sadly mistaken. Unfortunately, your body doesn’t always process the multivitamins well enough to get everything out of them and use it. For example, if you take them on an empty stomach, your body will absorb fewer of the great vitamins and minerals they contain than if you take it with orange juice. Some people purchase multivitamins that have over 100% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) so that they don’t develop deficiencies, but that doesn’t always work either. For example, vitamins B and C are both water-soluble. That means that they may just be excreted from your body before it’s able to use them. Vitamins A, D, E and K are fat-soluble. So, if you get too much of them, your body will hold onto them. The good news is that you won’t get a deficiency, but the bad news is that you risk taking them to toxic levels, which is a whole different concern! So, knowing all of this, could you be deficient in some necessary vitamins and minerals?

The Hajj Today: Can the Muslim World Make Sociological Sense of the Global Assembly?

It is the dawn of the Islamic sacred month of Hajj and, as usual, hundreds of thousands of Muslims are already converging on Islam’s holiest city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia for this year’s Hajj (pilgrimage) operations. Again, in the next few days, the pilgrims will join processions of over  two million people and perform a series of Hajj rites: they will circumambulate (Tawaf) the Ka’ba seven times, run (Sa’y) back and forth between the hills of Safa and Marwah, drink from the Zamzam Well, go to Mina, and further, to the plains of Mount Arafat to stand in vigil, spend a night in the plain of Muzdalifa, and perform symbolic stoning of the devil by throwing stones at three pillars. After the sacrifice of their animal, they will shave their heads. Then they will celebrate the three-day global festival of Eid al-Adha. Returning to Mecca, they will perform the farewell circumambulation of the Ka’ba. It is equally going to be a festive period for the rest of the over 1.8 billion Muslims at home across the world, as they will slaughter millions of sacrificial animals and join in the merriness of the Eid-el-Kabir (the Great Festival), as it is popularly called. Now, all this observed, the Hajj, the Festival and all the rest will be over. And, as the remnant of the meats is consumed and pots and plates washed, the festive mood would be mellowed down with the usual supplication: may the Almighty Allah spare our lives to witness another of such festivities in the coming years! The Big Challenge More pertinently, however, any sober reflection on the current tumultuous time which the contemporary global Muslim world (ummah) is passing through should provoke the thought and concern of the entire global Muslim leaders and intelligentsia on the primacy of making more, pragmatic sociological sense of the Hajj. No doubt,  in a holy month the sacredness of which is being profaned by the sacrileges of the ongoing Saudi-Yemen war, the protracted Syrian war, the atrocities of Boko Haram insurgents in Nigeria and the bombings and carnages across the rest Muslim countries etc., it is high time the global Muslim world begins to explore and exploit the sociological opportunities and benefits offered by Hajj to solve and resolve myriad of challenges confronting it; rather than the usual superficialities of the annual practice of the State sponsoring individuals for the Pilgrimage to Mecca, or the ostentatious fixing of ‘Hajj tooth’ by the merry-making tourist-pilgrims! Disturbingly, if, about 40 years ago, the Palestinian-American Professor of Islamic Studies, Ismail Raji Al-Faruqi (1982) had lamented that the crisis-stricken 20th Century Muslim “world ummah of Islam is undeniably the most unhappy ummah in the world in modern times,” for the reason that, “Despite the fact that it is the largest in number, the richest inland and resource, the greatest in legacy and the only one possessing the most viable ideology, the ummah is a very weak constituent of world order. It is fragmented into an endless variety of states, divided against itself, at loggerheads with other ummahs on all its frontiers,” we in the contemporary time cannot deny the fact that the narrative in the Muslim Ummah of the 21st Century has not fared better still. Rather, from the deepening feud and xenophobic tendencies between Saudi Arabia and Iran and their respective allies, to the diplomatic crises among the Gulf States and their political allies, and the instances of divisive and deadly inter-sectarian crises and clashes within various Muslim communities across the world, we see a Muslim world that has continued to be increasingly bedevilled by the escalating spate of division, disharmony, hostility, and the collapse of Islamic brotherhood, solidarity and diplomatic relations. True, with the instances of the scourge of state-sponsored political and religious persecutions, intra and inter-state wars and conflicts, intra-religious theological skirmishes and sectarian ideological conflicts and state-/group-sponsored terrorism trending across Muslim nations and communities, ours is a time where political disorder and upheavals, economic crisis, social unrest, poverty, diseases, and human rights abuses have become the commonwealth that is wreaking havoc upon the Muslim world, deepening the lack of peace, security, and development of a people who claim to believe in the religion of peace and Hajj! From reformist Salafism to Wahhabism, then to neo-Salafism, Takfiri-Jihadism, and radical Islamism, etc., we see ominous trends of Islamomania – Islamists’ fanatical, radical and extremist expression of Islam – destroying the fabrics of Muslims’ organic existence from the Middle East region, to the global world beyond. Sociological Utility of the Hajj From a utilitarian perspective, the Holy Quran aptly spells out the sociological utility of the Hajj to the Muslim world when it declares:  “And proclaim unto mankind the Pilgrimage. They will come to thee on foot, and on every lean camel, coming by every distant track, that they may witness its benefits for them and may mention the Name of Allah, during the appointed days…..” (Quran, Surah al-Hajj, 22:28-29) As far back as the 1940s, the Second Supreme Head of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim community, Hadhrat Mirza Bashirud-din Mahmud Ahmad (ra), in his characteristic insight and foresight, succinctly enlightened the Muslim world about the sociological importance of the Islamic Pilgrimage. He declared in his commentary on the foregoing Quranic verses thus: “Hajj provides pilgrims of different lands and diverse nationalities with an excellent opportunity to cultivate an acquaintance with one another and discuss matters of common interest”. “Apart from the spiritual good that the pilgrimage does to a Muslim, it possesses great social and political significance. It has great potentialities for welding different Muslim countries into one strong international brotherhood of Islam. Muslims from all parts of the world who meet at Mecca once a year can exchange views on all sorts of matters of international importance, renew old and establish new contacts. They have opportunities to acquaint themselves with the problems that confront their brethren in Faith in other countries, to copy one another’s good points and profit by one another experience and also co-operate with one another in many other ways. Mecca

For more than one hundred years the Ahmadiyya Muslim community has been leading a peaceful revival of Islam. From the time it was founded in India in 1889 it has enjoyed an unrivalled record for peace and for its efforts to build cohesive societies.
